Spring time is finally coming to our region, and while it’s something we all look forward to it can also mean the typical springtime pests will come back! When they do, it’s likely they will start making their homes in places like your gutters and other areas around your home. This might seem harmless but can actually cause major damage to your property. To make sure our customers are well-prepared, Coates Bros. is sharing the top three most common pests that you should look out for this spring!
1. Birds.
Birds are probably the most common animal that take residence in places like gutters, chimneys, and siding. They can be beautiful to see around your home but letting them build nests in the wrong places can be dangerous to your property. Some birds like to damage the siding in homes to get to the cozy layers underneath to make their homes. Birds like woodpeckers especially will burrow into your siding and once they’re in, the damage is done. They can crack your siding and leave holes in it, which make your siding more vulnerable to further damage. Bird nests can also completely block your gutter systems which can lead to leaks and overflowing gutters. Overflowing gutters can cause water damage to your foundation along with damage to any flower beds or landscaping you have around your home. Plus, standing water in your gutters can be a perfect home for the next pest of Coates Bros.’ list.
2. Mosquitoes.
Not only are mosquitoes annoying, they can also carry harmful diseases that can be dangerous to your family and pets. Mosquitoes like damp areas and standing water, which they can easily find in clogged gutters. Standing water is the perfect place for mosquitoes to lay their eggs and breed, which means you could have to deal with them all summer long. To help keep your friends, family and pets safe from these pests make sure your gutters stay clear of debris!
3. Squirrels and other rodents.
Squirrels, mice, chipmunks, and other rodents can wreak havoc on many areas of your home. Squirrels and mice are usually the most common and can usually cause the most damage. Squirrels and chipmunks like to collect their goodies like accords and other treats and take them back to their homes. If they make that home in your siding or gutters, their snacks can cause a lot of problems. These items along with their nests can clog your gutters or create cracks and damage in your siding. Keep an eye out for these animals frequently returning to your home. It might mean they’ve made a nest!
